SINOPSIS

English language learners should actively participate in various linguistic contexts to optimize learning outcomes. Therefore, while formal language learning in classrooms imparts formal elements of English, such as grammar and vocabulary, language learning beyond the classroom (LBC) provides meaningful experiences and chances to use the language in natural settings. However, while the importance of LBC settings is apparent, most research on English language learning and teaching has focused much on the formal classroom, specifically addressing the curriculum, syllabus, teaching techniques, and materials. Meanwhile, little is known about what occurs in informal contexts beyond the classroom. This book addresses the gap by focusing on community-based schools like Pesantren in Indonesia. It examines the experiences of Indonesian English language learners in informal learning settings and provides effective strategies for optimizing language learning outcomes through activities beyond the formal classroom.
